Deconstructing Broadway’s Disability Discrimination
Broadway has systematically excluded disabled artists for over a century. While recent productions like Spring Awakening (Deaf West) and Cost of Living signal progress, true inclusion demands more than token casting — it requires a fundamental shift in who gets to tell the story, and how.

“Fearlessly expressive, triple threat Liam Redford is undeniably Broadway-bound.”
-
“And Liam believes those within the dance community have a particularly great opportunity to advance the conversation or, as he puts it, “kick-ball-change the world.”
-
Director Liam Redford said, “Pippin asks what happens when meaning is promised through performance, and when ideals of greatness are packaged so beautifully that we stop questioning who benefits from them. The show's theatricality mirrors contemporary culture's obsession with visibility, productivity, and curated identity, inviting us to chase validation while remaining inside carefully constructed narratives.”

Director and choreographer Liam Redford describes the work as a response to “a moment in American history of political disruption and unprecedented violence.” He explains, “When asked how we feel about it, our cast members have shared language such as ‘terrified,’ ‘under pressure,’ and ‘motivated.’ Distance from the Dream was born from those same impulses: a belief that theatre can confront the fractures in our country while still giving us space to hope, to sing, and to dream.”

“Liam Redford started dancing at 8 years old, but truly fell in love with the art when he
was given the opportunity to play Billy in Billy Elliot the Musical at 5 regional theaters
throughout the United States.” -
The Grace Kelly Scholarship, awarded in collaboration with the Educational Theatre Foundation (ETF) and the Princess Grace Foundation, aims to empower students to pursue their dreams with financial support for continuing education and mentorship by a Princess Grace winner. Named for the late Princess Grace of Monaco, the scholarship honors young artists who demonstrate exceptional talent and a commitment to artistic and social impact.
The 2024 recipient, Liam Redford, embodies that mission, blending his unique talents with a focus on accessibility and advocacy. Currently a student at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, ETF spoke with him to learn more about his artistic journey, aspirations, and the impact of the Grace Kelly Scholarship.

“I saw Liam, they alternate the cast, Liam is… to perform this role, it is such a hard role… You have to be a quadruple threat to perform this. You have to be really good at acting, really good at singing, exceptionally incredible at dancing… and Liam is so good at it.”
