Who Am I?
Liam Redford is a New York City-based dancer, musical theatre artist, choreographer, director, and arts accessibility advocate. He is currently completing his BFA in Dance at NYU Tisch School of the Arts, with a minor in American Sign Language.
As a performer and creator, Liam is interested in the intersection of concert dance and musical theatre, with a particular love for work that is theatrical, physically dynamic, and driven by storytelling. His artistic experience spans performance, choreography, directing, and movement direction, allowing him to approach each project from both sides of the stage—and occasionally from somewhere in the wings when things inevitably go wrong.
Liam Redford’s love of performing began early, growing up, the youngest-ish (he’s a twin) to the family, in New Jersey with a passion for movement, storytelling, and the stage. He began his formal dance training at Dansations School of Dance in Hainesport, studying a wide range of styles with a particular focus on musical theatre, contemporary, ballet, and jazz. Alongside dance, Liam trained in gymnastics for seven years at Envision Gymnastics, developing the strength, athleticism, and physical awareness that would become foundational to his career. His very first musical was Annie Jr. as Bert Healy AND Mr. Bundles and since then he has been hooked!
In 2017, at just eleven years old, Liam’s career took a defining turn when he was cast as Billy Elliot in The Road Company’s production of Billy Elliot the Musical at the Grand Theatre in Williamstown, New Jersey. What began as an opportunity to audition for the young male roles quickly became his first major professional theatrical experience. After an intensive rehearsal process, Liam made his debut as Billy on October 19, 2017, becoming the 227th young actor worldwide to portray the iconic role. He would go on to reprise Billy in four additional regional productions across the United States—including Signature Theatre in Arlington, Virginia; Seacoast Repertory Theatre in Portsmouth, New Hampshire; City Springs Theatre in Sandy Springs, Georgia; and Opera House Theatre Company in Wilmington, North Carolina—ultimately performing the role 100 times on his final closing night. These productions marked the beginning of a formative chapter in Liam’s artistic life and established his love for the unique combination of dance, acting, music, and storytelling that continues to shape his work today. He has gone on to perform in productions including Nigel in Matilda, Bobby in Cabaret, Angel in Kinky Boots, Ensemble in The Prom, and Christian in Fun Home, and more. He also occasionally professionally (and recreationally) reprises his alter ego created during Kinky Boots, jump-splitting and tumbling drag queen “Samantha Cooturr”.
Liam has trained with artists and companies before and during his time at NYU Tisch, including Limón Dance Company, Francisco Gella, Ladies of Hip Hop, David Dorfman Dance, Joffrey Ballet School, University of Michigan’s Department of Dance, and EVIDENCE, as well as through international programs including Berlin’s B12 Dance Festival. His work as a choreographer and director includes productions of Pippin, Fun Home, and Distance From the Dream, 13: The Musical, among other projects.
Alongside his performing career, Liam is passionate about expanding accessibility within the performing arts. His study of American Sign Language has shaped his artistic practice and his long-term goal of working as an interpreter and advocate for Deaf inclusion in theatre and dance. Alongside his performing work, Liam was also named his high school’s Valedictorian and Class President, reflecting the academic discipline and leadership that have remained central to his artistic career.
His work as a young artist was recognized with multiple honors, including a Julie Award for Best Actor for Billy Elliot, an NJACT nomination for Best Actor and a win for Best Musical for Billy Elliot, an NJACT nomination for Best Choreography for 13, and Multiple BroadwayWorld Awards nominations. In 2024, Liam received the Princess Grace Foundation–USA High School Award in Musical Theatre, marking a significant recognition of his development as an emerging theatre artist and beginning the next chapter of his career. He was also a finalist for the NHSDA Award and a recipient of the NJ Governor’s Award for Excellence in Dance.
Whether he’s dancing, choreographing, directing, or volunteering with Camp Fatima of NJ (over 1,000+ Hours), Liam is committed to creating work that brings people together, escape, laugh, and learn!
